Lewis' slam leads Dogs past Rebels

OXFORD, Miss. - Joey Lewis hit a two-out grand slam in the seventh inning Friday to break open a 2-2 tie and give the No. 1 Georgia baseball team a 6-3 Southeastern Conference victory over Ole Miss.

Lewis’ 13th home run of the season helped him break out of a 1-for-19 slump and enabled the Bulldogs (33-9, 14-5) to maintain a 1 1/2-game lead for the conference title.

Trevor Holder (6-2) earned the win for Georgia, pitching six innings, giving up three hits and two runs and striking out three. Dean Weaver pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to record his ninth save of the season.

The Bulldogs had 11 hits and besides Lewis were led by Rich Poythress, who had three hits and two RBIs, and Peter Verdin and Levi Hyams, who had two hits each.

The Bulldogs and Rebels will play the second game of the three-game series at 5 p.m. today.
